Eletha's Foe - The Meeting

Logan had managed to track down Eletha a few days after they had escaped from Calynn’s clutches. He had found she had been taken care of by a red headed woman in a nearby town who was obviously a friend of hers. Eletha had been lucky to be found since she was in such a bad state and the red headed woman seemed perfectly strong and capable.  Seeing as she was okay, Logan had been looking into what Calynn was doing. She didn’t hesitate to send out people to hunt for the elven girl and so he intercepted the ones he found. He wouldn’t let them anywhere near her if he could help it. After all, she felt like his responsibility seeing as he saved her life. It was almost like he saved her from one nightmare just to throw her into another.

Now he was at Star City in Burwell, drinking a cup of coffee at a café in the afternoon. He hadn’t heard anything for about a week and it had been about a month and a half since Eletha had been picked up by her friend. He had a table by the window and was watching the people passing by. Really, he needed a break. He’d been working non-stop as well as dealing with the pawns Calynn controlled. Honestly, her charm level was really high. She had them wrapped around her little finger and it seemed like he was the only one it hadn’t worked on.

As he took another sip of coffee, his gaze lifted to see golden blonde hair in the light. Then he saw the face and he instantly recognised it as Eletha. The woman was walking down the street and would pass the shop. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her. Not because he had any attraction towards her, but because she looked so expressionless. When she was alone she was on guard. If she held still people would think she was a statue. And her aura made people keep away from her. Like she was a dangerous doll. It made Logan sit up more in his seat as he watched her walk by. They were less than a metre from each other but in completely different worlds.

He let out a sigh, shaking his head a little. It really bothered him that she had become this way. He had no idea what she had been like for the past seven years, but it must have been a dramatic change. Compared with her cheerful, outgoing self before, it was shocking to see the difference. It made him want to talk to her, to see what kind of life she had lead, but he worried that if he did, the trauma of everything would be too much for her. He was, after all, the connection to her past. The last person she saw at the scene of the crime. He didn’t want to cause a negative effect on her.

He glanced at the seat opposite him where his bag and weapon sat. Really, he had to take his stuff back to the place he was renting for a few months while he worked in Burwell. He had just had his weapon repaired as it had become damaged from use and it had cost of bit of money. Luckily for him, he wasn’t skint. In fact, he had a good bit of money. Maybe he needed some work done on his armour too…

Something in the corner of his eye caught his attention but it disappeared just as quickly as it had come. But he knew better than to ignore it. His instinct never failed him. It was them. Those after Eletha. He downed the rest of his coffee before standing and placing some money on the counter. A waitress came by and asked if he wanted anything else. His dark stare out of the window disappeared instantly as he smiled politely at her, sending the woman into a flurry of blushes, “No thank you. I’ll be on my way.”

“Yes,” the woman nodded, taking a step back to let him out and he took his things, inclined his head to her, and left the shop. As soon as he had stepped out of the door, his eyes became harsh, looking in the direction Eletha had gone. A couple of women who had seen him come out had glanced over him with lustful eyes but on seeing his expression turn dark they felt the hairs on their neck stand on end. His aura changed completely and they retreated while he began to walk in the direction the elven woman had gone.

Eletha had decided to go shopping. Well, really, she was giving a few items to a charity shop. She had a purple and green scarf on and her new brown boots that she just loved that she wore over the top of her usual black shorts and green leotard.

Her hands no free of the bag, with her usual bag on her shoulder and bow and quiver on her back, she felt a bit lighter. Now she was passing by the shop windows, checking out the items she liked but would never buy seeing as she didn’t own her own home. That pair of bedside lamps were lovely, and the sofa she had seen in the previous shop was of such a nice style.

She sighed lightly, her hand resting against the window of the next shop as she stared at a dressing table. It was so pretty with a mirror on top. Her heart ached to be able to purchase something so easily with a place to put it.

She pulled away reluctantly and forced herself on her way. People took for granted what they had. She did want her own place but she could never quite do it. It made her feel sick and lonely and if she bought one she would probably not stay in it for long. She could imagine feeling the heartache of a happy family home that she had lost at a young age. It wasn’t worth thinking about.

She headed for an alleyway that cut through to another section of the two centre but wasn’t used much. Probably because it stank and had cigarette butts and litter strewn about the place where the homeless had to spend time with those with bad habits to get some shelter during the cold nights.

As she walked down the long walkway it seemed even longer as she could hear her lone footsteps, her heels clacking against the stone ground. Then she heard another pair of footsteps. As she glanced back she noticed something move but disappear. It made her stop for a moment and her instinct kicked in. She was in trouble. She looked ahead and saw someone standing at the other end of the alleyway and from his body language she knew he was hostile. She turned, not wanting to fight if she could help it and found the other end was blocked as well.

“Damn,” she whispered to herself and looked around quickly to see a fire escape nearby. As soon as she spotted it the two men ran for her. She didn’t waste a second, hurrying to the escape and yanking down the ladder before scurrying up it as quickly as possible. Then she made her way up the steps as fast as she could, with the men quickly in tow. As she reached the roof, she realised she wasn’t alone up there either. Two men were up there already waiting. It was a trap.

She gritted her teeth, her fists clenched. The odds were certainly not in her favour.
They were quick with their attacks and Eletha managed to take down two, one with a throwing knife and another knocking them out with her hand to hand combat. She barely had time to get her bow out at all and after taking the second person down she ducked as the other two advanced on her and managed to take out her main weapon. She shot one with an arrow in the shoulder as she really didn’t want to kill anyone and he was unable to use his fighting arm and the pain made him nauseous enough to stop. She turned on the fourth who attacked her with magic so she dove aside before the electrical strike could hit. But as soon as she was on her feet, he was throwing more magic at her so she just had to run along the long roof. The buildings here were terraced so she could run for a while, but a handle of more men appeared here and there and she knew she was surrounded yet again. They were going to capture her this time for sure. She had only seen them twice before and had managed to evade them or fight them before escaping. It looked hopeless this time.

She did her best but became overwhelmed, gaining a scratch on her left cheek from an enemy arrow and a burn on her upper right arm. It made it painful to fight but she had to and the adrenaline rush was making it easier. She didn’t even notice the graze on her right knee where she had tripped from a geomancer using a brick to sweep her feet seeing as it was made of earth.

‘What do I do?’ she thought to herself, taking deep breaths as she tried to catch her breath, an arrow ready as she looked around. They had stopped attacking, knowing she was in the middle of a deadly spider web. They would only take action if she attacked so she just watched them all walk towards her.

‘You’re coming with us,’ one of them said, making her frown. At least they wanted her alive but then it made her wonder if she would be better of being killed by them. There was no way she wanted to face that freak of a woman anyway.

That was it. She was going to beat them or die trying. She pulled back the arrow and fired, hitting one quicker than he could react. She attacked the next and didn’t even need to look behind her to know one had come upon her. The man’s shadow covered her and as she turned her head to look up at him, seeing his long sword up in the air ready, she knew she had no time to defend herself.

Then the man was knocked back so far it was shocking, and the men around him seemed to be thrown back by a shockwave. It all happened in an instant as soon as a dark figure swept across her vision. Her eyes widened as she stared over her shoulder at the man who was now behind her, his back to her with a large deadly spear in his hand. The aura she felt from him was ominous and powerful, but she also knew he was an ally. His sandy blonde hair was tousled by the wind he had caused until it fell back into place, and he looked over his shoulder at her. His eyes were a powerfully piercing blue and for a moment they had been frightening until they made eye contact with hers. They softened instantly.  It was like he was two different people. And something about him made her tremble a little. She didn’t know what it was but she had to know. She knew she had to find out.

He didn’t say anything, just nodding his head slightly and she nodded back to acknowledge him. She knew what it meant somehow. He was going to back her up.

The fight didn’t last long. She took out her fair share, glad to know she didn’t have to watch her back and she could defend his, and he took out the men so easily she wondered how experienced he was. He was definitely older than her and was nearly a foot taller than her. And he had a strong build. He was definitely skilled.

When only one had escaped and there was no one else left standing, Eletha put away her weapons before turning to the man who wiped his brow before sheathing his own weapon. She could tell it was a dragoon’s weapon so he must have been from Balfarc Empire.

She bowed to him politely as she said, “Thank you so much for your assistance. I would never have escaped them if it wasn’t for you.”

Logan watched her for a moment. It was strange to hear her voice as a woman rather than a teenage girl. His face softened considerably as he smiled at her. She was still bowed, looking at the ground until he accepted her thanks. Polite as her people had always been.

“It’s nothing,” he said, “I’m glad you’re safe.” As soon as he had spoken those words, Eletha felt her stomach grow tight and her eyes prickle with tears. She looked up at him quickly, her mouth opening as if to speak but she couldn’t. As she stood up slowly, her memories came back, but not to the terror she had felt that day nearly seven years before, but to the moment she had been saved. And the voice that spoke to her. His face was more manly, older, but there was no mistaking it. Now she knew what was niggling at her when they fought Calynn’s men. On seeing him she had recognised his aura, his stance and his jaw line and lips that had been the only visible thing when he had found her. He was more muscular now as well so it had taken her a moment to really confirm it.

“You,” she said but found her voice caught in her throat and her hand flew up to grip her neck as if to stop herself choking, “You’re,” her voice came out more of a loud whisper. Logan inhaled, his body tensing for a moment because he realised what she was thinking. She’d realised who he was. Would she be angry at him for leaving her?

“You’re the one who saved me, aren’t you?” she forced herself to speak, desperately trying to keep control of her emotions. Logan’s eyes looked away for a second before returning to her eyes to say, “Yes.” As soon as he said the words the tears she had held back spilled down her cheeks. Her hands covered her face as she started to cry. All her usual cold façade disappeared and she was back to that teenager Logan had rescued. The man let her cry at first, but then walked towards her and placed his hand on her shoulder, “Eletha-” Before he could finish, she removed her hands from her face and looked up at him, wailing, “Thank you so much for saving me. I’ve wanted to tell you every day since. It’s been hard but I am so grateful.” Logan looked at her in surprise. He realised he honestly thought she would be furious at being left alone like that.

Eletha quickly wiped her eyes, her breath coming out in hiccups as she regained her composure. Then she said, “I’m sorry for crying. I’m sure I’m bothering you.”

“You’re not. Trust me,” he smiled at her, petting her head gently, “I’m sorry I left you.
At the time it was a bad time and so I did what I thought was best. But maybe it wasn’t the right thing to do.”

“No, I’m just glad you helped me,” Eletha said. She looked up at him again but didn’t say anything, observing him instead. Logan waited and when he figured she wasn’t going to speak, he raised his eyebrow as he asked, “What?” Eletha blinked, stiffening and took a step back, “I’m sorry. I just always wondered what you looked like and now you’re here it’s…very surreal.” It was only then that she started to feel the pain of her injuries. The adrenaline had started to dissipate. She frowned, looking at her burnt arm and touched the skin around it. It wasn’t a large area but it still hurt a lot.

Logan looked over her at her wounds before asking, “Is your home nearby so you can rest?”

“I have no home,” Eletha admitted, “I have been travelling ever since that day.” Logan felt his heart ache then. What sort of situation had she been put in? Why was she in such circumstances with nothing and no one to go back home to? He rubbed the back of his head as he pondered on what to do before finally coming up with an solution that wasn’t exactly ideal but would have to do, “I am renting a place here in the city. I can take you back there and you can tend to your wounds.”

Eletha felt herself blush a little, feeling embarrassed. It wasn’t because he was a man but because he was the man who saved her, the hero she had searched for. Just like a fan would be nervous of being invited back to her idol’s place (if that was ever possible), so she was when he said those words. But she nodded to show she would go with him. She wasn’t sure she would be able to speak coherently because of the nerves that kicked in.

“I will carry your things,” he said as he picked up her bag.

“Ah, I can,” she started but he shook his head, “You are injured. And besides, a man shouldn’t let a woman carry things if he can help her.” Eletha blushed a bit again, tucking her hair behind her ear. That hadn’t happened before either. She was usually so insistent on carrying her own things and being tough, but this past year she had softened up and now her tough exterior didn’t work at all around him. Even Logan noticed that she had lost the wall she put up around her. Initially, Logan thought she would refuse. After all, she knew almost nothing about him and she would be going to a man’s house alone. Agreeing to come with him without hesitation was a bit worrying. However, it made him smile a bit. That fifteen year old girl was definitely still in there. She hadn’t lost herself completely and that was good to know.

“Come along then,” he smiled at her and led the way.
They finally meet. YAY! :iconyay:

I had an idea and planned it and wrote it...then the ending of this chapter became a complete mystery to me! So I hope this turned out ok.

Eletha and Logan both belong to me.
