The Shocking Truth

Description

Despite the traumatic event that changed her life, Eletha somehow kept a smile on her face, her spirit lively, though sometimes she did faulter and draw within herself. It made some who got to know her a little concerned. Either she was denying what had happened or was fighting it. But how did you handle losing all your family and friends in death in such a murderous way?

But nothing prepared them for her reaction months later. Something kept making the fifteen year old Eletha draw back to her home. The urge was overwhelming and subconsciously she just wanted to see if it was all real. Maybe it was a lie and when she returned they would all be there waiting for her, her parents angry that she had left the village alone. Even the scar on her own back and stomach couldn't prove to her what had happened.

As Eletha neared her village in the late afternoon, the sun beginning to set, she noticed the plants that looked like they were withering. Ash began to litter the floor here and there and increased in volume as she pressed on. The ash made her stomach turn and bile burn her throat but she continued, her eyes widening a little. Her body was more tense than she realised. Her mind was in denial but her body knew better. It screamed at her to flee. It knew she couldn't take it.

As she stepped onto the grounds of her village, what laud before her was unbearable. Bodies strewn about, left to rot. The stink was putrid and made her already weak stomach bring up its contents. She felt bad for vomiting on the ground at the feet of her people, but it had been so shocking, she had no time to react. Her eyes began to fill with tears as she walked amongst them, observing the faces that she could make out. Not even the rats had come to this place to have such a feast. Such was the curse of the Great Tree being killed. Nothing wanted to live there or even stay there.

It was so cold. Eletha wrapped her arms around herself as she headed towards the Great Tree where she then found her father. The sobs escaped her then, her hands cupping her mouth. It was too much. This was too horrible. And it was real.

The rain began to fall slowly at first, but it soon picked up and Eletha found herself staring up at the sky, her eyes glazed as if they lost all life in them. Her mind finally cracked and all of who she was shrank, locked away inside herself. As if she were a doll. Even the tears that poured down her cheeks finally came to a stop and she just stood there, unable to move or say a word.

She didn't know how long it was when she finally moved, and she spent it burying those that she could. She would make a gravestone for them all as she didn't know all their names. It was almost robotic - how she moved - moving back and forth as if the dead didn't affect her. Not even a smile, not even a cry, not even a sad expression sat on her face as the memories of the people she recognised flooded her mind.

When she was done she kept her head bowed, saying silent words to the people who had fallen. And after taking her father's bow from what was left of her house, she left the village, her soul as dead as her hometown behind her.

As you know, Eletha gets better despite being an awkward person. Meeting her fifteen year old self after this though...you wouldn't get much out of her. :/
